How does one study scriptures like an apostle? In weight training, I'm constantly looking at different methods, trying out new things, pushing myself to get the best results possible. Shouldn't I be doing the same with my spiritual strength?
Indeed, I think I should.
What do I already know about Scripture Study?
- We should begin with a prayer
- We should have a specific question
- We should avoid distractions, and study in an area conducive to the spirit
- We should record answers to our question in a special place for future reference
- We should set a goal to change our behavior based on the acquired knowledge (application)
QUESTION: How do the prophets approach scripture study?
Nephi:
" For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children."
~~2nd Nephi 4:15
Nephi claims that his soul delights in the scriptures. He seeks to write them and ponder them, both for himself and for his children. Ponder means to think deeply about, to wonder about, and then to pray about.
How does one gain a delight in something?
Understand the benefits of it.
Be good at it.
That entails spending lots of time doing it.
See results from it.
Since it is a spiritual thing, probably need to have the Spirit about you to delight in it.
Nephi uses a word pattern twice. He says that "my soul delighteth in the scriptures and my heart pondereth them" in 2nd Nephi 4:15. One verse later, repeats the same phrase, "For my soul delighteth in the things of the Lord, and my heart pondereth continually upon the things which I have seen and heard."
I deduce that Delight---->Pondering
I also deduce that Pondering means to "think continually upon the things which you have both seen and heard."
So, Jarom reads a scripture and likes it so much that it won't leave his mind. It will remain with him for the entire day. Oh to be that sort of Jarom!!
What do I really want in life? I fear that sometimes I've relegated the gospel to a nice accessory in my life. I like it because it brings peace, balance, and comfort when I need it. But it's far from the most beautiful treasure of my heart. To tell the truth, I'm far more interested in other things.
But I believe in the formula that was taught yesterday in Stake Priesthood Session:
Work----> GOSPEL---->Blessings
Funny... I'm having the same reaction here as Nephi, and I didn't even notice till just now. (See verse 17.)
"Oh wretched man that I am!" exclaims Nephi, "Yea, my heart sorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities."
Meanwhile, we're all thinking "yeah right, Nephi. Oh wretched man that you are."
Well, let's get a second opinion, shall we?
And that from a child thou has known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration from God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
~~Timothy 3:15'
As children, we ought to know the holy scriptures. They make us wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ.
Wow, that's a dense statement! Let's unpack it a little:
- Wise
- Unto Salvation
- Through Faith
- Which is in Christ
Wise means having a deep and mature understanding of how something actually works. "Having or showing experience, knowledge, or good judgement."
But it's not just any wisdom. It's "wisdom unto salvation." So, it is experience, knowledge or good judgement which leads to eternal life.
But through faith. It must be coupled with faith which is in Christ.
Знаете, что можно делать? Можно пригласить девушек на музей в Спрингвиле. И вот так, что ждёт тебя на конец всего!! That is definitely a worthwhile place, ala Richard G. Scott. And the museum is open till 9:00 PM on Wednesdays!
